TODAY’S SPECIAL
The name, Today’s Special, refers to the special of the day: chicken pot pie, say, or meatloaf. And since I write about food — I write features for the Los Angeles Times and cookbooks, and what food comprises a major slice in the pie chart of my day’s real and mental activity — having a food-focussed title seems appropriate. The title is also a reminder that today is special. It’s all we have. It’s the only day in which we can do anything at all. It is special! As monk and mystic Tomas Merton, wrote Today will never come again.
I’m not exactly sure what Today’s Special will be. I know it will include recipes. And I know it will be a place for me to write.
When I don’t write, life gets hard. It’s like I am in a race to keep up with the passage of time, and I’m losing. As if life is a precious sand slipping through my fingers and the only way to make it anything but a total loss is to write about it. If someone happens to read what I’ve written, even better. That’s where you come in.
Today’s Special will be a reader supported endeavor. While I find my way, it’ll be free. Think of this as a “friends and family” restaurant opening, where you get to eat for free while the restaurant figures out what’s working and what isn’t.
Thanks for being here.
Really. xxcc
